Meeting of the January 31 2022

Present: Elodie Salmon, Chunjing Qiu, Catherine Ottle, Agnes Ducharne, Philippe Peylin, Philippe Ciais, Bertrand Guenet.

Notes: BG

BG rapidly summarize the work already done around peat. The slides can be found here

Wet horizons is new project starting led by Philipe Ciais. 2 post doc will work on this project mainly on drained peat There is also a collaboration with ETH who wants DOC leaching from peat area reconstruction much more detailed that what has been done with LUH2

New post doc of permafrost for degraded permafrost with a new soil tile

What about the phosphorous?

We should also have in mind the status of the PEAT-LEAK which is a version merging the ORCHIDEE-LEAK and the ORCHIDEE-PEAT. This version is used on the mangroves work with Wei Li, Laurent Bopp, etc.

We must coordonate with the project ESM 2025. Nicolas Guichard and Pierre Regnier recruited 2 persons to add the « leak » or C-lat related in the trunk.

Then we basically have 2 options:

Option 1. A C-only with peat and clat (not only leak) and then N

Option 2. We have peat in the trunk and then we add the clat

Question by PP on the hydrology how the soil tile is added?

CQ: The soil tile is derived from the existing one and it loops over the 4 soil tiles. If you considered cultivated peat you even have 5 soil tiles.

Comments by PC: Be careful the soil tile is independent for hydrology but not for the thermics

Comments by AD: Porosity from the peat soil tiles, what happens when you have the dynamic peatland?

Response by PC and CQ: If the peat expand, immediately the hydraulicc parameters becomes peat parameters, there is no transient between mineral/organic soils

AD: My question is more about water mass conservation.

CQ: Done some years ago, water were conserved but not recently.

PP: Is the dynamic of peat is prescribed?

CQ: It can be done dynamically or not. It is important to have it for long term simulations but you can have prescribed areas. The dynamic is based on topmodel recalibrated for peatland.

PP: Suggest we organize 1/2 day of work when the postdocs of ESM 2025 will arrive. We should also be careful to know how it will interact with the multi-tilling work by CO, PP and Julien Aleon.

PC: Mentioned that CQ also did some development around tropical peat.

AD: You may have better peatland if we used the work of Ardalan Tootchi compared to the initial maps of swamps by Matthieu Guimberteau.

PP: Did you add a new PFT for peatland?

CQ: Yes

Concluding

Discussion with Nicolas and Pierre because both strategies are interdependent (ESM-2025 + peat/trunk)
