Abstract

Exports of terrestrial carbon (C) through the river network of the Amazon basin are non-negligible for its C budget, but have to date been ignored in land surface models used for future projections. Here, we utilize a new land surface model that simulates the coupled evolution of the terrestrial C balance and river C fluxes from 1860 to 2100. The terrestrial net-uptake of atmospheric CO2, the terrestrial C storage, but also the leakage of terrestrial C through the river network are simulated to increase over the simulation period. CO2 emissions from the river-floodplain network and fluvial exports of C to the coast increase by one fourth at the end of the 21st century, but harvest as additional lateral C export and the growth rate of terrestrial C stocks increase even more. While nearly half of the terrestrial net-uptake of atmospheric CO2 is channeled to the ocean until the mid-20th century, this proportion decreases down to about 10% at the end of the 21st century. Moreover, we estimate that neglecting fluvial C exports from the Amazon basin leads to a 20% underestimate of the terrestrial net-uptake of atmospheric CO2 over the historical period 1861-2010, while at the same time, the increase in terrestrial C storage is overestimated by 5.1%. For the future projections, the biases are lower due to the decreasing relative importance of fluvial C transfers in the C balance of the Amazon basin.
